Shortly before D-Day a special unit was formed (No 34 Reece Wing) in order to act as
'spotters' for the large naval guns aboard the British & American battleships that could
reach up to 20miles inland. The 'Wing' was made up of No.'s 26 & 63 Squadrons, RAF
and several RAF Mustang squadrons. These squadrons joined 808, 885, 886 & 897
Squadrons of the Fleet Air Arm at RNAS Lee on the Solent. They were also joined by
Cruiser Scouting Squadron 7 (VCS-7) of the US Navy. VCS-7 were the only US Navy
squadron to fly the Spitfire. The aircraft carried British markings throughout their
existence.
'At The End Of The Day' shows two 'Spitfires' of VCS-7 crossing the Normandy
beaches shortly after D-Day.
